10 Wanderlust-Inducing Travel Books
No shame in my reading game. When I’m not working, writing, shopping or cuddling, I’m definitely reading. I’m a total bookworm and love to take some good reads with me whenever I travel.
Whether it’s a juicy beach-read for a relaxing vacation, or a long flight abroad where I need to pass some hours, traveling with a book (or two) is a necessity.
The ten books below are perfect for your next trip… Lightweight and compact, they won’t weigh down your carry-on or crowd your suitcase. You could also get the e-reader version if that’s more your speed. Personally, I love a physical paperback, but I’m an old soul.
Most of them will inspire you to plan your next vacation before you even make it home (or at least day dream of where you’ll be heading next). Plus, they’re each available on Amazon for under $12.
1. The Good Girl’s Guide to Getting Lost by Rachel Friedman.
My number one recommendation for anyone who loves traveling. If you’ve ever thought about dropping everything and backpacking the world, beware of this book! You’ll find yourself considering the possibilities thanks to Rachel and her inspiring, comical adventures.
2. State of Wonder by Ann Patchett.
Trek through the Amazon of Brazil with doctors in search of a ground-breaking new drug. Especially exciting and interesting if you’re not in the medical or pharma fields.
3. Lost Horizon by James Hilton.
This teeny tiny book is packed with an imaginative story about a plane crash in a land you wish existed. (Or does it actually exist and we just can’t find it?)
4. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
A classic novel. I fall in love with this book all over again every time I pick it up. It’s the perfect pool-side read as you sip a rum daiquiri.
5. Tales of a Female Nomad by Rita Golden Gelman
An inspiring story of a woman’s journey around the world. Empowering to women and men alike, this book will motivate you to take that solo trip to foreign lands.
6. The Alchemist by Paul Coelho
Powerfully strange and exciting, this book will encourage you to find your true calling in life. A self-empowerment book disguised by the story of a young boy’s journey to enlightenment.
7. Lord of the Flies by William Golding
The original “Cast Away” and an elementary school classic you probably didn’t appreciate. Reading this as an adult was much more interesting.
8. Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
A female traveler’s bible. Elizabeth Gilbert goes on a quest of self discovery, healing, learning and ultimately finding love. Read the book before you watch the movie!
9. Neither Here Nor There by Bill Bryson.
Bill Bryson is a household name when it comes to books about travel. Bill transports you throughout Europe on an epic journey filled with adventure, beer and comedy.
10. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
Another classic. This is a deep-read about friendship, love, betrayal and redemption set in South Asia. Pick it up and you can’t put it down.
Remember these books for the next trip you take! Even if you’re not traveling anytime soon, these books will transport you to other lands and let you leave your current world behind. Happy reading!
